Day 25: Wednesday, May 6th
Canyonlands National Park
Today, we drove over to Canyonlands National Park which was about 35 miles to the Northwest of Moab. really a great drive too!
This is the view from across the street from the Visitor's Center.
WOW!
This is what's called cyanobacteria, a "living soil" composted of bacteria, moss, lichen, which holds the soil in place, gives the seeds a breeding ground to germinate, and prevents erosion. It's very delicate and one footprint could destroy decades worth of growth.
Another really cool juniper tree.
The first short hike was to Mesa Arch, took about 15 minutes. It's perched very precariously on the edge of this cliff.
You could walk right up to it, but just don't walk under it.
Here's the view down under.
Paw is checking out the view from the edge.
From the left side of the arch, you have this view.
You can see how the arch is perched on the edge here.
The LaSal Mountains in the background, the Canyonlands in the middle and the arch in the foreground.
More beautiful wildflowers.
It's definitely spring time here.
At the end of an eighteen mile drive, we reached Grand View Point. Here's the view.
The road below is a 100 mile dirt road that takes about 2 days to travel. The thin straight line that's barely visible is an old uranium mine road.
Grand View Point.
Natalie and I took the 2 mile rim trail called Grand View Trail to the edge. The marked the trail with these square cairns.
In the distance you could see the Green River before it joins the Colorado River.
Our last stop for the afternoon was a section called Upheaval Dome.
